What I learned from my college experience

I recently completed my Diploma in Arts and Science Studies at Camosun College. I’ve just recently made the transition from student to undergraduate and I’m just now realizing how many things I learned in college both in and out of the classroom. I would like to share with future college students 3 things I learned during my 4 year tenure at Camosun College.

  1. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

Everyone in college struggles with completing assignments on time and studying for midterms/finals. In this case reaching out to your professor or even the guidance councilor is no big deal at all. In my experience both have been incredibly understanding when I’ve been having trouble. I would usually reach out to my professors via email if I had any questions about assignments or midterms/finals. One time I was so stressed out about a midterm exam that I went to see a guidance councilor and he helped me get back on track and process everything that was going on in terms of coursework.

2. Work on your schoolwork for each class a little bit each day

The first thing I did when I started college was come up with schedules for working on assignments/studying. I would dedicate a certain amount of time each day for my work. Though this all depended on the amount of coursework I had on a given week combined with the number of courses I took. However other factors played a part as well including due dates and the difficulty level of the assignment or study material to memorize for the midterm/final exam. I would always finish my assignments early so I had more time to review them and add some finishing touches so I could improve my overall final grade on the assignment.

3. Find a study partner in your class

A great way to bond with people in your class is to find a study partner. You usually have anywhere between 5–10 days to study for your midterms or finals. Usually during this period you can find someone in your class who is equally stressed about the midterm/final exam. I would usually find a study partner in my class who I’d review my exam notes with in advance. To me it was a great way of getting to know my fellow classmates who had similar interests to mine.
